Youth Soccer

What is it?

Soccer is one of the fastest growing team sports for boys and girls. Youth Soccer at HVCC is categorized in two areas: Recreational and Developmental League Soccer.

 1. Recreational Soccer ( 9 years of age and older)

The recreational program provides an opportunity for players to have fun, learn the sport of soccer and develop a life long love of the game without the emphasis on high level competition.

The Recreational teams play a spring season through May and June. Play resumes after the September long weekend for District and City playoffs which continue through to late September or early October.

For children 9 to 12 year old, the teams are a maximum roster of 14 and  children play a 9-a-side game on a 3/4-sized field. The 13 years of age and older teams play with a maximum roster of 18 and players play an “11-a-side” game on a full sized soccer field. There are no tryouts for these teams and children are grouped by age.

Days of Play

(U9 – U11 – U13 – U15 – U17) will generally play on Tuesdays, Thursdays and/or Sundays depending on the number of teams in a division, field and referee availability.

(U10 – U12 – U14 – U16 – U18) will generally play on Mondays, Wednesdays and/or Fridays depending on the number of teams in a division, field and referee availability.

2. Developmental League (10, 11 and 12 years of age)

The Developmental Program is for players who want to continue to learn and build their skills at a competitive level and pursue soccer as a lifelong sport. The Developmental League program is available to all children who are 10, 11 or 12 years of age in the current calendar year. This program requires an intense degree of commitment to the game and skill development.

The District Association will conduct evaluation sessions, from these assessments they will form as many equally balanced teams as possible. Every reasonable effort will be made that if a child registers and wishes to play at this level, they will be given the opportunity to do so subject to maximum rosters of 14 a team. The teams formed for this league will be District teams.

Developmental teams travel and play city wide.  Teams usually play an average of one game a week, with the majority of time spent on practice and skill development sessions during the week.  Games may be scheduled on weekends.

The season begins at the end of April/beginning of May and continues through to the middle of July.  Play resumes in September for Fall Playoffs.

3. Portage Trail Premier and Premier Developmental League

These programs are available for youth who wish to play in the WYSA Premier and Premier Developmental City wide Leagues.

Players interested in the Premier and Premier Developmental Leagues must understand that these competitive programs require an intense commitment to the game and players go through an evaluation process before being offered a team position.

The Premier and Premier Developmental League season runs late April/ early May through to the 2nd Tuesday of July. After a three week summer break, play resumes in August and continues through to the final game in late September or early October.
